First Degree Burn
The first-degree burn is burn involving the superficial layer of the skin, quite painful with red blisters but often resolves by itself. There is no scar and skin heals normally by the end of the week.
Second Degree Burn
Second degree burn is also called partial thickness burn. Burn involves a deeper layer of skin and is also painful. Healing may take up to 1-2 months and often leaves a scar. A visit to the doctor is advisable.
Third & Fourth Degree Burn
Both third and fourth degree burns are full thickness burns. They involve the whole layer of the skin and also underlying muscles and tendon. Doctor’s care is must and you should not delay. The burnt region looks black and crisp, there is no or little pain. It will not heal by itself.
Treat A First Degree Burn At Home
First degree burn can be treated at home because it will eventually self-heal and it would not leave a permanent scar. Unlike second degree burn, pain and swelling are less and tolerable in first degree burn. All we need to do is avoid infection and help with the pain. Cool Compress For Burn

Use water with normal temperature and wash the burnt area with it if possible for at least for 5 minutes. Otherwise, soak a compress in water and cover the burn with the compress. The trick is to regularly change the compress for early relief. It will speed up the healing and provide pain relief.
Aloe Vera For Burns
Though aloe vera is not recommended in second degree or third degree burns, it is definitely useful against small first degree burns. Magical nature of aloe vera provides soothing sensation in burnt area and helps with the pain. However, avoid applying oil or butter to the burn, it will accentuate the damage.
Take a small amount of aloe vera gel or extract some from aloe vera leaves and apply it gently over the burnt region. Do not scrub too hard or you might end up peeling more skin than the burn. Bandage the burn adequately. Repeat the process 2-3 times a day. It is important to change the dressing of injury. It tells if the wound is healing or harboring infection.
Use Honey For The Burn
Honey is a natural remedy for a lot of things, burn is no exception. Using honey to a first degree burn, however, needs care. Before using honey, wash the burn thoroughly with clean cool water. Use soap but don’t scrub hard. Once the wound is clean you can use honey.
Apply a thin layer of honey over the burnt region or on the gauze piece. Cover the burn with this honey impregnated gauze piece and dress the wound with a bandage. Bandaging 2-3 times a day is advised.
Using Lavender Oil For Burn
Lavender oil has been used since ages against burn, it’s calm and soothing nature is helpful in first and second degree burn. Although nowadays, it is avoided in second degree burns, it is quite practical in first degree burns. With its analgesic and natural healing properties, lavender is the perfect home remedy for burn.
Pour a small amount of lavender oil on the burn after cleaning the wound. Now place a gauze piece over the burn and wrap it with a clean bandage. Dressing and caring are advised 3-4 times a day. Observe the pus or infection if any.
Use Tea bags And Mint to Treat First Degree Burn
Tea bags are another way to about treating burns. Essential is that it only helps in first degree burns, it will have less or no benefit against a second degree burn. You can use tea bags alone or with mint leaves.
Put 3-4 tea bags in cool water, make sure that temperature of the water is near normal and apply the solution formed locally. Another choice is you can mix these tea bags with a cup of mint leaves and boil them both together. Now let the solution cool down and then apply it on the superficial burn.
Vinegar to treat first degree Burn
Another way to treat burns at home is to use vinegar. It is a common kitchen ingredient and is widely used in our homes. Not much of a trick in using it against a superficial burn.
Clean the wound with cool running water and apply vinegar on the burn, preferably with fine cotton. Once it’s done, make a cool compress and apply it to the first degree burn. Do this 2-3 times a day for effective results. Do not pour vinegar over the burn, use it gently with cotton.

These were a few effective ways to battle the burns. Still, there are a few things which you need to know before taking the matter into your own hands. These few things are:
- Do not put ice or chilled water on a burn, it is not going to help you. It will do more damage than good.
- Do not break the blisters, they will disappear on their own. By breaking the blisters you are exposing the raw skin and inviting infection over.
- Avoid peeling of skin and if it’s peeling by itself then don’t disturb it. Skin will take its time to heal.
- Lastly be attentive while handling electricity or fire anything which can cause a burn.
